[Home Cooking] Sweet Potato & Pork Cream Stew | Sweet, Creamy, and a Big Hit with Kids

Yam pork creamy stew

I used to regularly prepare sandwiches, soups, or baked goods for dinner—simple meals my kids love and eat well. These were familiar options for my children, who attend daycare and kindergarten here in Poland, and they were quick and easy for me on busy days.

Recently, however, my 2.5-year-old started asking for a proper “cooked meal” every evening. After trying out various dishes, I discovered that he especially enjoys meals made with ground meat and eggs.

So these days, I often make a saucy, stew-like dish with ground meat and serve it over rice or noodles for a satisfying one-bowl meal.

Today’s recipe combines pork with sweet potatoes(yam) and a smooth, creamy sauce. It has become a family favorite not only because the kids love it, but also because it is so convenient for my husband and me to reheat anytime.

A little while ago, I served this stew to our babysitter, and she loved it so much that she asked for the recipe. Since I wanted to share a link with her, I decided to write down one of our absolute favorite family meals!

Why I Love This Recipe

  • A texture even my 2.5-year-old happily finishes: Tender ground meat and sweet, soft-cooked sweet potato come together with a creamy sauce, making this a great option even for picky eaters.
  • You can use whatever ground meat you have: It doesn’t have to be pork. Ground beef, chicken, or other ground meat works just as well.
  • Perfect with either rice or noodles: Pour it over pasta for a creamy pasta-style meal, or serve it over rice for a delicious rice bowl.
  • A great make-ahead meal: Prepare the stew ahead of time, then simply reheat it in the microwave or in a pan when dinner time comes. You’ll have a comforting meal ready in no time.
  • Frozen vegetables make prep easy: Frozen vegetables and fruit retain nearly as much nutritional value as fresh produce. Since they are already washed and prepared, they are incredibly convenient to use.

Ingredients (Serves 3–4)

  • 300 g ground pork
  • 1 large sweet potato(yam), about 350–450 g
(In Polish: batat. It is a little different from Korean sweet potatoes.)
  • 2 small onions
  • 200–250 g frozen mixed vegetables
    • Carrots
    • Broccoli
    • Cauliflower
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 250 ml water or stock (I used stock)
  • 150 ml milk or cream (I used cream)
  • Salt
  • Optional: Black pepper
  • Optional: 1–2 tbsp Parmesan cheese

[Preparing the Ingredients]

Sweet potato
→ Peel and cut it into small 1–1.5 cm cubes.
It is best to cut them small enough that the kids can easily mash them with a spoon as they eat.

Onions
→ Finely chop the onions. I use a manual pull-string vegetable chopper. It saves my eyes from all the tears and makes it easy to chop the onions very finely without much effort.
Since the onions add natural sweetness to the sauce, don’t be afraid to use a generous amount.

Frozen vegetables
→ Cut any large pieces of broccoli or cauliflower into smaller, kid-friendly pieces.
There is no need to thaw them, but I usually thaw them first and then chop them finely using my manual vegetable chopper so that my child doesn’t pick them out while eating.

How to Make It

1. Sauté the onions until golden

Add 1 tbsp olive oil or butter + 2 onions to a large skillet or deep frying pan and cook over medium-low heat for 5–7 minutes.
Cook until the onions become translucent and lightly golden. Rather than cooking them quickly over high heat, it is important to cook them slowly to bring out their natural sweetness.

2. Add 300 g of ground pork

Add the ground pork and increase the heat to medium.
Break the meat up into small pieces with a spatula and cook for about 5 minutes, until the pork is completely cooked through and most of the moisture has evaporated.
If your child likes it, you can add a little black pepper at this stage.

3. Add the sweet potato and vegetables

Add the prepared sweet potato and frozen vegetables.
Stir-fry everything together with the pork for 1–2 minutes.

4. Add 250 ml of water or stock and simmer

Pour in 250 ml of water or unsalted stock.
Once it starts to boil, cover with a lid and simmer over medium-low heat for 10–12 minutes. Stir once or twice during cooking.
When a chopstick or fork slides easily into the sweet potato, it is almost ready.

5. Mash some of the sweet potato

This is the key to this recipe!
Once the sweet potato is cooked, gently mash some of it with your spatula.
I like to leave 20–30% of the sweet potato in cubes and mash the remaining 70–80%.
The mashed sweet potato melts into the cooking liquid, naturally thickening it into a creamy sauce.

6. Add 150 ml of milk or cream

Reduce the heat to low and add 150 ml of milk or heavy cream.
Simmer gently for 3–5 minutes. Try not to let it boil too vigorously.
As the sauce thickens, the sweetness of the sweet potato, the richness of the milk or cream, and the savory flavor of the pork come together into a smooth, creamy sauce.

7. Season

If you are making this for children, start with about 1/4 tsp of salt, mix well, and taste. Add a little more salt if needed.

8. Want to make it even more delicious?

Turn off the heat and stir in 1–2 tbsp of Parmesan cheese. It adds extra richness and savory flavor and works really well with this dish.
If you are adding Parmesan, however, make sure to use less salt from the beginning since the cheese is already salty.

Adjusting the Consistency

If the stew is too thin:
→ Remove the lid and simmer for 2–3 more minutes to let some of the liquid evaporate.

If it is too thick:
→ Add 30–50 ml of milk or water.

Here’s How We Ate It at Home…

My husband enjoyed the chunks of sweet potato and ate the stew over rice, while my 2.5-year-old had the mashed sweet potato and finely chopped vegetables mixed with noodles.

Wanting to make his meals a little healthier, I always keep egg noodles on hand and cook some whenever I need them. Depending on the thickness of the noodles, they take much less time to cook than pasta, which makes them really convenient.

I also stored the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheated them the next day with a little extra milk. We got another delicious meal out of it!

I hope you give this recipe a try and enjoy it as much as we do!
